Some people have feathers, stones, drums, rattles, crosses, or maybe even a hair...whatever the object may be, the person puts their beliefs in this object and the object then is powerful. This sacred object gives the person something to hope in, blame, and thank for what may happen in their life. This is a sacred object in which one worships.
The idea that you remove something sacred from its original home and put it somewhere maybe in your home, or anywhere (your car, your office...) and to think that it could be an item that brings blessings to you or could possibly curse you is kind of silly to me. However, this is the way that many people live their lives, with certain beliefs and with supersticious thoughts leading the way they live. Many people live this way because of religious beliefs and believing in certain objects or spirits help to give people reason for what goes on around them. Also, I think many people do this to have something to hope for, and possibly to have something to blame when bad things happen...along with something or someone to thank when good things happen.
To me, it seems as though placing so much belief in an object is all a state of mind. If you choose to believe that a peice of hair will hold power and control your life, then you choose to believe that. Just like when someone believes that their cross, or their "lucky" rabbits foot, or drum, or feather (or whatever the item may be) is a determinate of their luck, blessings, or curses, that is a choice. It could be possible where in some cultures, believing in certain objects is such an influential part of their culture that everyone in that culture may have been raised to believe that the object holds power, and may pass that belief down to their children and so on. In such cases, people probably believe until they are old enough to challenge their own beliefs and to choose their beliefs for themselves. In that kind of situation it is a cultural, or religious belief. In other cases it can just be because someone chooses to put their beliefs in an object maybe for personal reasons, spiritual reasons, or for whatever reason.
I really think that the main reason people put all of their belief in one object is to give themselves hope and to have something (if even it be a little hair) to believe in. I think as long as people believe in something, anything, it gives them reason to hope and reason to live. When people take these beliefs very seriously it can be funny to make fun or poke jokes at this but with like with all satire - it is just humor and should be taken with a grain of salt.
