Globalization or Americanization?

May 12, 2008 / by bbonacich

Globalization.  It seems more like Americanization to me.  After watching the documentary on Thomas Friedman investigating the lives of the workers in India which American corporations have outsourced American jobs to, I feel as though we are inforcing the American way of living on their culture.

Some people argue that globalization is bad because Americans are in threat of or already have lost their jobs to it.  Some argue that globalization is great because its a win-win situation for everyone involved.  American corporations save money and it provides jobs to foreigners who would otherwise be jobless. Me, I am in the middle.  My main concern is are the people with these jobs being influenced to heavily by the corporations of America?  Though these jobs provide them with a steady income and they seem to be happy, I still just wonder.  Afterall, they work all hours of the night, they are forced to change their way of speaking to sound American, and there were American flags surrounding the cubicles and hallways of their offices.

I don't know, I guess I feel like globalization is a good thing for the most part.  I guess I just feel like it is one thing to give jobs to these people, but I think it is going beyond that...with these jobs we are influencing them to live like Americans: fast-paced, over-consuming people (for the most part).  However, it is their choice to live how they would like to live and if they want to live like Americans and have the means to do so, it is their choice.

So, while I feel that globalization is very important and should definitely continue, I also feel that localization should not be lost entirely.  I think that all of the cultural beliefs that make each country unique are very important as well and should remain.
