A bridge in a physical sense is a structure of some sort that allows a being or an object to cross from one point to another. They are often times high above water or streams and can often be dangerous. A bridge is strong and usually can with-hold a large amount of pressure. There are many famous bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge. Furthermore, the word "bridge" is used in many phrases that suggests the word in a more symbolic sense rather than a physical sense like "Don't burn your bridges before you cross them." This saying suggests that someone has either hurt a relationship or an opportunity that can no longer be broughten back. Just like if you were to cross a bridge in a physical sense, once you burn that bridge, there is no way to get back to the other side.

The Bridge of Hesitation is one I am much less fimiliar with. In An Artist of the Floating World 'the Bridge of Hesitation' "...is a little wooden bridge..." located not far from the main character (Masuji Ono's) house. This physically small, wooden bridge has a name that metaphorically means much more than what the book has lead us to believe thus far. This 'Bridge of Hesitation' is symbolic to what the character Ono is experiencing in his life. As I read further along, I assume my understanding of this will develop.
Being that a bridge, symbolically, can have a very deep meaning I believe that 'the Bridge to Hesitation' will have a very deep meaning in the life of the character Masuji Ono. As we already know Ono is a retired artist who seems to be seeking clarity in his life and is possibly yearning to resolve unanswered issues or questions. It seems as though he is looking to his past and is unsure about his future. I think that these issues will be the underlying issues or the foundations of the 'Bridge of Hesitation' for Ono.
Could the 'Bridge of Hesitation' be a starting point of change? Or maybe it is the unstable journey of having a fear and conquering it? Maybe the 'Bridge of Hesitation" is symbolic for taking the first step toward a change in Ono's life. Maybe the bridge will have many meanings. Maybe this bridge is one that is small and secure or one that is very high and dangerous. Maybe it will be opposite of its physical sense and be massive and concrete in its symbolic sense and in the involvement of Ono's character.
Just like crossing a physical bridge by foot or by vehicle, you cross it step by step, mile by mile, and soon enough you have reached the other side. It is the same with a bridge in a symbolic sense and I am curious to see where the 'Bridge of Hesitation' will take Ono throughout this book.

Good job...i hope the book expands into further detail with the bridge and comparews it further with Ono's life
Very very interesting. Probably, 'the bridge of hesitation' may also be linked to the formation of Ono's identity over all those years of his life in which he walked step by step to construct himself.
